Music Therapy
A research-based health profession in which musical activities are designed to accomplish non-musical therapeutic goals in a non-threatening environment.

With young children, music therapy provides a unique variety of musical experiences in a developmentally appropriate manner to effect changes in behavior and facilitate development of communication, social/emotional, sensori-motor, and/or cognitive skills.  Music Therapy is a great supplement to occupational and physical therapy programs.

Music Therapists must have a bachelor's degree from an approved college or university program.  The degree is designed to impart competencies in three main areas:  musical foundations, clinical foundations, and music therapy foundations and principles.  In addition to the academic coursework, a music therapy student is required to complete 1200 hours of clinical training.  Upon completion of the bachelor's degree, music therapists are eligible to sit for the national board certification exam to obtain the credential Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC), which is necessary for professional practice.  To learn more about Music Therapy, please visit the American Music Therapy Association website at www.musictherapy.org.
